Pattern Games in Dog Training

Pattern games for dogs are sequences of behaviors or actions that dogs can learn to recognize and respond to. By teaching your dog simple patterns, you can enhance their learning experience, improve their focus, and create a fun and engaging training environment. Pattern games help dogs anticipate what comes next, making training more enjoyable and effective.

Benefits of Teaching Patterns

  • Enhanced learning helps dogs understand what is coming next, making it easier to learn new behaviors.

  • Improved focus encourages dogs to pay attention and stay engaged during training Sessions.

  • Increased confidence comes from successfully completing pattern games, which boosts a dog’s self-esteem and reinforces positive behavior.

  • Strengthened bond occurs as working together on pattern games fosters feelings of trust between the dog and their caregiver.

The Simplest Pattern Game Down & Up

The “Down & Up” game is a simple yet effective way to introduce puppies or dogs to the concept of pattern games while teaching them to offer attention through capturing.

How to Play

  1. Prepare your treats by having a handful or two of small, high-value treats ready.

  2. Quietly place a treat at your feet (or just slightly in front of you) on the ground without actively seeking your puppy’s attention.

  3. Stand still and allow your puppy to discover the treat on their own. As they approach and look DOWN to eat the treat, remain quiet and patient.

  4. After your puppy eats the treat, they will likely look UP towards the hand holding the treats. Initially, mark this attention with your marker word (we recommend “3!”) and immediately place another treat between your feet to start again.

  5. Gradually fade attention from the hand by moving it closer to your face each time they look up at it, eventually encouraging eye contact instead. Mark and reward when your puppy makes eye contact with you.

  6. Hold your hands behind your back and reward for offered eye contact without prompting.

  7. Practice for only 6-12 repetitions during any one session, work to build speed and return focus on you.
