Puppy Name Training 101: How to Teach Your Puppy Their Name

How to teach your puppy their name

How to teach your puppy their name might just be the simplest and most rewarding part of early training, and it's easier than you think! With a few treats, a distraction-free space, and a positive attitude, you’ll have your pup perking up to their name in no time. Let’s walk through this step-by-step puppy name training guide.

Step One: Introduce the Cue

Start in a quiet room with no distractions.

  1. Stand about 1 foot away from your puppy.

  2. Say your dog’s name, don’t worry if they don’t respond right away!

  3. Immediately reward them by tossing, dropping, or handing them a treat.

  4. Repeat this for 2–3 minutes as long as your pup is engaged and having fun.

Pro Tip: Make the reward exciting, drop the treat on the floor or toss it to make the game more fun!

After a couple of short sessions, test your progress by saying their name outside of training time. If they look at you or perk their ears, you’re ready for the next step.

Step Two: Add a Little Distance

Now, take a small step back, literally.

  1. Stand 2–3 feet away.

  2. Say your puppy’s name.

  3. When they look at you, toss them a treat.

Simple, right? Keep it short and rewarding.

Step Three: Play the Name Game

Turn training into a game with friends or family.

  1. Have 2 or more people sit or stand about 5 feet apart.

  2. Take turns saying the puppy’s name.

  3. When the puppy looks at the correct person, they get a treat.

Puppies are smart! Change up the pattern so they can’t predict who’s next, it keeps them focused and learning.

Step Four: The Room Challenge

Now it’s time to add some mystery.

  1. Go into a different room where your pup can’t see you.

  2. Say their name.

  3. When they come find you, reward them with a treat, or a few.

  4. Move to another room and repeat the fun.

Pro Tip: If they do well, jackpot them, give them several treats for the big win!
