Mastering Dog Walking Training Games with the Station to Station Pattern
Station to Station
The “Station to Station” game builds on the skills learned in the previous modules (Down & Up and 1-2-3), adding distance and motion to enhance your dog’s focus and walking skills. By incorporating stations, such as a small bowl or lick mat, you provide clear targets for your dog, making it easier for them to understand their path and destination. This game is particularly useful for puppy greeting training techniques and for working on focus games for reactive dogs through desensitization and counter-conditioning (DS/CC).
How to Play Station to Station
Set up stations by choosing several locations in your training area to serve as stations. Use small bowls or lick mats as markers.
Place a treat on the bowl or lick mat at the first station, wait for your dog to approach and eat the treat. Capture attention by waiting for your dog to look up at you after they finish the treat, reinforcing the attention skill learned in the “Down & Up” game.
Use the 1-2-3 pattern as you move to the next station by starting to count “1-2-3.” Reward your dog on “3” as you approach the next station, maintaining their focus and anticipation.
Gradually add distance between stations as your dog becomes more comfortable with the routine.
Eventually you can place distractions at the stations or move the whole game outside.

Tips for Success
Keep sessions short and engaging to maintain your dog’s interest. Use high-value treats or rewards that motivate your dog during training. Be patient and consistent with cues and rewards as your dog learns the new pattern. Gradually increase difficulty by adding more stations or distractions over time.
Conclusion
The “Station to Station” game effectively builds on previous skills by adding structured movement and focus while providing opportunities for additional training goals like puppy greeting training techniques and reactivity work. By incorporating this into your dog walking training games, you enhance your dog’s skills and strengthen their ability to handle various situations confidently. It’s one of the most practical focus games for reactive dogs to build real-world reliability.
